Okay, so the name of the place is anything but a vegetarian’s dream. But hear us out: we were thrilled to see that this seafood-centric place graciously offers a vegan po’boy sandwich, constructed from vegan sausages. Wild Blue is an unassuming, tiny little shack on the corner of Central Avenue and 20th Street, next to the fabled Haslam’s Books. It’s as close to street dining as you can get in St. Pete; walk up to the window, place your order with the pleasant gentlemen working in the booth, sit in one of the chairs, and wait. You can watch the traffic along busy Central; read your new find from Haslam’s, or, look upward at the metal ceiling that shelters Wild Blue’s customers from the sun: look up, and you’ll see an inflatable Mr Peanut, some skates, Tampa Bay Rays bobblehead dolls, and other wacky ephemera hanging from the rafters. For vegetarians, there is also boiled peanuts, boiled mushrooms, red beans and rice, corn on the cob, and hot garlic potatoes. This is pure Southern African-American eating – right in the heart of St. Pete. Catering available. Generic soda, water and iced tea available.
Open 7 days per week, Mon-Sat 11am-1opm; Sun 12-8pm.
